Fantastic news that Smalling and Vidic will be fit for the start of the season, but Jonny Evans will not after having an ankle op. Hopefully we will have enough cover, but the left back situation is still worrying.
Rooney, Messi, Ronaldo, etc, etc, the candidates for the best player in Europe award are the usual suspects, but there is also Les Davies of Bangor City who was allegedly voted for by a Welsh journalist. Whilst this is a hilarious situation, and even Sky Sports struggled to get footage of more than one piece of action featuring the infamous Les, the organisers need to sort this out, otherwise we could have the likes of Gareth Barry and Jordan Henderson sneaking their way in.
Its now official. Robin Van Persie and Andy Carroll are the summer transfer "sagas". Getting fed up of hearing about them, and whilst I would have either at OT, I still think that RVP's reputation as being injury prone shouldnt be forgotten after just one prolific season. The Carroll situation is a bizarre one, and is a brave move by Brendan Rogers. If Liverpool don't start well, and struggle for goals (as Swansea did last season), the knives will be out, and King Kenny's bandwagon will race alongside Rafa's as the Scousers cling to past glories.
Fergie announced that he wants the title back. That is his top priority. I thought that was spot on, but then I thought, if we were in the Champions League final against City and we were in a title showdown against Chelsea, which would we prefer? It doesnt really matter, as MUTV have pointed out that every time we go to South Africa on a pre season tour we return to win our trophy back (three times so far, but if its good enough for them....)
The Lucas Moura transfer appears to have hit a snag, and all over 4m. The total fee is somewhere between 30m and 35m, but agents, players, third parties etc all want a piece of it. I'm surprised they aren't claiming Tesco Clubcard points. Now, I know that Fergie is always adamant that he must get value, but in a week when we were again announced as the most valuable sports franchise on the planet, ahead of Real Madrid, are we going to give up the chance of signing the next Pele/Kaka for the sake of 4m? Or are we just avoiding making another Kleberson type mistake? There are rumours amongst the fans that the money simply isn't there, and that this is just a smokescreen, or maybe we really are insisting on value. There are other rumours that another clause gets triggered on 1st August, at which point his transfer fee will go even higher, but it could just be that we are waiting for the Olympics to finish before finalising any move, a dangerous ploy as his value certainly won't go down.
So, the first pre season game was a narrow 1-0 win against Amazulu, not a great game but it got a lot of players game time. Nothing to get too excited, or too worried about. Lingard was probably the best of the youngsters, showing real class on occasions, and I bet most of us had forgotten about Macheda. I really hope Chicarito starts hitting the back of the net with some regularity as the season draws near, and what should we make of Berbatov? He's been rumoured to be going here, there and everywhere, and yet he starts pre season in midfield. Is that a new role for him? Alternating with Scholesy perhaps? Look forward to seeing what happens when the first team squad are all together.
